As we rehearse our correctness, we might wheel out our recycling bins in honor of Friedrich Wilhelm Heinrich Alexander Freiherr von Humboldt, better known simply as Alexander von Humboldt, the German naturalist and explorer who was born on this date in 1769. Humboldt’s careful and quantitative study of botanical geography helped found the field of biogeography– and made him the spiritual father of the study of ecology.
