As we admire the intricate inking, we might recall that it was on this date in 1931 that President Herbert Hoover, at the White House in Washington, pushed a button that turned on the lights of New York City’s Empire State Building, officially opening the tallest building erected in the world to that date. (After the fall of the World Trade Center in 2001, the ESB became again the tallest building in New York.)
