As we wonder if this could possibly be what Benjamin Franklin had in mind, we might recall that it was on this date 1961 that the first “real” in-flight movie was shown to passengers on a TWA flight. The very first film shown aloft is believed to have been “Howdy, Chicago,” a short screened on Aeromarine Airways as its amphibious airplanes flew around Chicago. But real in-flight entertainment was born when David Flexner invented a 16mm film system for commercial carriers. The inaugural feature was By Love Possessed.
