Continuing on a comic theme…
As we consider the widening gyre, we might recall that France’s national heroine, Joan of Arc, was born on this date in 1412. (For good measure the French celebrate her today, on her birthday, and also on her saint’s day, the day of her death [May 30], and on May 16, the day on which she was made a saint… and well they might: France gained previously unattainable unity– and effectively became a nation– when she was martyred at age 19.)
