And they’re off!…

The caterers haven’t yet even opened the cans of Vienna sausages for the Inauguration Ball, but Ladbrokes, the British book-maker, is already taking bets on the 2012 U.S. election.  As reader SS points out, one can check the odds here.

It’s going to be a long four years…

As we calculate our bets, we might recall that it was on this date in 1898 that Marie and Pierre Curie discovered the element radium; they announced their findings on Boxing Day. Marie was a pioneer in the development of the theory and understanding of radioactivity, the only person honored with Nobel Prizes in two different sciences, and the first female professor at the University of Paris.  Pierre was no slouch either.
