Alphabetically appetizing…

As we finish digesting our Thanksgivings feasts, our minds are free turn to repasts-to-come.  And as they do, what better companion and guide than the extraordinary M.F.K. Fisher?

Our friends at Gourmet have posted Mary Frances’ “An Alphabet for Gourmets,” an evocative meditation on 26 facets of our relationship with food– and a wonderful read!

As one might say to guests about to tuck into dishes that one’s just served, “Enjoy!”

As we loosen our belts, we might recall that it was on this date in 1590 that Edmund Spenser’s Faerie Queene was “entered”–  registered for publication with the Stationers’ Company– a pre-publication step necessary in the days of English government censorship to obtain a “copyright” (which then meant, literally, “right to make copies”)… and so we met the “gentle knight… pricking on the plain.”
