As we decide whether or not to agree with Dorothy that there’s no place like home, we might recall that the first railroad to connect two oceans directly, the Panama Rail Road, opened on this date in 1855, when a locomotive made the first trek from the Atlantic to the Pacific. (The “golden spike” was driven, completing the first transcontinental railway across the U.S. in 1869.)
