As we ready the ivories for tickling, we might rethink interlocking alliances, as it was on his date in 1914 when Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia after it failed to meet the conditions of an ultimatum it had set on July 23 following the killing of Archduke Franz Ferdinand by a Serbian assassin.  One thing quickly followed another, and World War I was underway.

We might also wish a hard-boiled happy birthday to Kenneth Fearing, poet laureate of the Depression, and author of the extraordinary suspense novel, The Big Clock.  He was born in Oak Park, Illinois on this date in 1902.
