As we perfect our costumes, we might recall that it was on the evening of this date in 1934 that John Dillinger, “Public Enemy #1,” was shot and mortally wounded outside the Biograph Theater in Chicago by FBI agents led by Melvin Purvis. Dillinger had just seen Manhattan Melodrama (a gangster picture) with his girlfriend, Polly Hamilton, and Anna Sage (Ana Cumpanas); Anna, an illegal alien, had tipped the especially-anxious Purvis (from whom Dillinger had escaped before) to the plan in return for immunity from deportation and some cash.
