As we sharpen our blades, we might recall that it was on this date in 1559 that the English Reformation was solemnified, as The Act of Supremacy was passed by Parliament; Queen Elizabeth I thus became Supreme Governor of the Church of England, formalizing steps taken by her father, Henry VIII. Subsequently, the Act of Uniformity was passed and the Book of Common Prayer was introduced. The calendar of saints’ feast days progressively became Anglican-ized… and confusion deepened for school children and ecumenical scholars alike.

Happy Thomas Pynchon’s Birthday!!!
