As we pack for high altitudes, our thoughts of travel might jog the memory that it was on this date in 1860 that Pony Express service was begun… The Pony Express, which connected St Joesph, MO with Sacramento, was expensive ($5 per ounce of mail carried) and short-lived (it closed in October of 1861)… but this reaction to the government’s response to communications requests prior to 1860 (in effect “if it was really important people should take it by horseback”) fired the public imagination and led to a reversal of government policy: the government invested in more economical overland mail service… and thus, the Pony Express faded away.
