The Art of the Long View…
Paul St. George is close to realizing his dream of completing a tunnel from London to New York, through which viewers on either side can see the others, using a “telectroscope.”
Based on plans developed (and started) by his grandfather, the telectroscope has surfaced in both London and Brooklyn.
For more, including the backstory, see the Telectroscope website and its blog.
(But for a faithless assertion that this is simply a clever art project, see this New York Times article.)
As we prepare to squint, we might whisper a birthday greeting to Transcendentalist essayist Ralph Waldo Emerson, born on this date in 1803. Emerson might well have had the Telectroscope in mind when we argued that “the reward of a thing well done is to have done it.”
